Tech Thursday(ish) Six - Microwaves

I don't have any special insights for microwaves, but I do have a question...

What's the deal with all those buttons on microwaves? Don't get me wrong (I've been gotten wrong before, and I don't like it), I love microwaves, but are those buttons all necessary? Do they even do anything? I'm sure that if I press them, they will beep and perhaps display something but it will do the exact same thing as if you hadn't pressed them.  Do you ever use the supposed myriad functions of your microwave?

I'm confused, too. There is a button for "beverage" . . . but you have to experiment to know whether or not to push it once, twice, or maybe three times . . . let alone if you put in two cups. I think the microwave people ar elike Microsoft . . . they know what is best for us and don't try to foil them.

I love the popcorn button, and the defrost button. I mean popcorn ... nuff said. As for the defrost ... we always forget to put the meat out to thaw. Defrost is a life saver. Sure it acually cooks the meat a little, but in a pinch it works wonders.

I'm pretty old school, so I usually try to find and use the power settings myself. Our first microwave came with a little chart that said things like "80%=Reheat, 20%=Defrost, 10%=Warm." Oh, and I'm pretty good at using the 'clock' button after any power outages.

Hey Justin,
I don't know anything about microwaves except that you shouldn't try to boil an egg in one, foil also is something to be avoided, and bacon only takes 60 seconds microwaved not 60 minutes. That is some hard earned wisdom -- so put it to good use. Actually, the reason I am writing is because I love the website you helped develop for Imago Dei. I am a member there and haven't been able to navigate that site since I started going. I couldn't even find where to register for the class I was teaching. Crazy -- so what you have done is great and I'm glad to let you know that.

I need me some Tech Thursday! Gimme gimme gimme! Or just update and let me know how your life is going...

yes, i use all the buttons on my current microwave, but that's only like 20. The one in the condo must have like 40... and i'm entirely certain i will never use half of them. I think it's really funny, however, that microwaves went from having 2 "dials" to having 20 buttons. Where was the 5 button stage? Microwaves don't evolve properly. Must be genetic engineering.
